Why Shaded exists

Pigment, not chalk.

We tore down about twenty volume, texture and tinted powders. Every single volume powder was colourless — and most of them built their lift with glue.

Pigment, not chalk. Medium, mid-pump

The problem nobody names

“Translucent” powders are white.

Every volume powder on the shelf claims to disappear. Tip one out and it's a white powder — which is exactly why it sits at your roots as a chalky cast, and why you can only really use it on blonde hair.

So we matched it

A powder can't blend into hair it doesn't match.

Shaded is pigmented with mineral iron oxides in three shades, so it diffuses into your natural colour instead of sitting on top of it. Match your roots, not your ends — and if you're between two shades, take the darker one.

Minerals, not glue

Lift that brushes straight back out.

Almost every volume powder builds its height with a synthetic film-forming polymer — the glue that coats the hair and stacks up through the day. Shaded lifts with silica and rice starch, which grip and then leave.

How it's different

Shaded vs the typical volume powder.

Water is often the second ingredient on a powder label, which is why most of them need two or three preservatives. Shaded is anhydrous — there's no water in the tube at all, so there's nothing to preserve.

I started by mixing eyeshadow into volume powder. Ten years in the making

Ten years in the making

I started by mixing eyeshadow into volume powder.

That was 2017, on the floor of the salon, because every powder I reached for left my brunette clients dusty at the roots. The fix was obvious. Getting it right was not.

The first job was getting rid of the glue. Almost every powder builds its volume with a synthetic film-former that coats the hair and stacks up through the day — so we rebuilt it on minerals instead, silica and rice starch, which grip and then leave.

Then we went further: iron oxide pigment in three shades, and no fragrance — because that's the one thing you kept asking us for. Ten years to make a product with almost nothing in it.

What's actually in it

A short list. No glue.

Anhydrous means there's no water in the tube — so there's nothing to preserve, and nothing to evaporate. What's left is the part that does the work. Not every shade contains every one of these; the full ingredient list for your shade is on the pack.

A short list. No glue.

Silica Silylate

The lift. A mineral that separates and props up the hair at the root.

Silica

Grip and body — the soft grit you feel when you fluff it through.

Hydrated Silica

Absorbs oil, which is where the dry-shampoo effect comes from.

Rice Starch

A plant powder that softens the feel so it never goes chalky.

Iron Oxides

The pigment. Mineral colour, blended to three shades.

Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein

Conditions the hair shaft so the grip isn't dry.

It's this easy

Dry hair, thirty seconds, done.

Two products finish the job if you want more than volume: the comb sets the height, and the texture spray carries it through your lengths.

Dry hair, thirty seconds, done.

Step 01

Shake it, then tap it

The powder settles between uses. Cap off, give it a shake, then tap the base against your palm so the powder drops down into the pump.

Step 02

Pump along your part

Aim the nozzle straight at the parting, close to the scalp, and pump in short bursts — along the part first, then through the crown. Go lighter than you think.

Step 03

Fluff and go

Work it in with your fingertips. That's what diffuses the colour and builds the lift. No brush needed.

Natalie's rule

Go lighter than you think.

It's far easier to add a second pump than to take powder out. Start with less, fluff it through, then build if you want more height.

Before you pick a shade

The questions we actually get.

When will my pre-order ship?

Pre-orders ship from 8 October. You'll get a shipping confirmation with tracking the moment yours leaves us. If you order other products in the same order, everything ships together once Shaded is in.

Does it cover greys?

No — and we won't pretend otherwise. Shaded is a volume powder with pigment in it, so it blends into your natural colour and removes the white cast a colourless powder leaves behind. It is not a root touch-up or a grey coverage product, and it won't behave like one.

Which shade should I choose?

Match your roots, not your ends — Light for dark blonde to blonde, Medium for brown to light brown, Dark for black to dark brown. Between two shades? Take the darker one; it diffuses lighter as you fluff it through.

Will it leave a chalky white cast?

No. That cast comes from colourless powders being white — a white powder can't blend into hair it doesn't match. Shaded is pigmented with mineral iron oxides in three shades, so it diffuses into your natural colour instead of sitting on top of it.

How is it different from other volume powders?

Two ways. Almost every volume powder builds its lift with a synthetic film-forming polymer — the glue that coats the hair and stacks up through the day. Shaded lifts with minerals, silica and rice starch, which grip and then brush and wash straight out. And every other volume powder is colourless, so it can only disappear on light hair.

Will it come off on my hands, or my pillow?

It's a dry mineral powder applied at the root and worked in, so once it's fluffed through it stays put. There's no film-former holding it there, which is exactly why it brushes and washes out cleanly rather than building up.

How long does one bottle last?

2.0 g sounds small because the powder is extremely light — a couple of pumps covers a full parting. Used a few times a week at the roots, expect three to six months from one bottle.

Why is it fragrance-free?

Because you asked us for it. It came up again and again — from clients with sensitive scalps, from people who don't want their hair competing with the perfume they've chosen, and from stylists working on a dozen heads a day. It's a preference, not a verdict — plenty of our products are scented and people love them.

Can I use it on coloured or treated hair?

Yes. There's no alcohol, no water and no preservative in it, and it sits on the hair rather than penetrating it. Match the shade to your current colour at the root.
